Kids 'R' Kids is here! Our Kindergarten program is enriched with a standards-based curriculum, wonderful learning stations, and an abundance of creative learning activities students will enjoy. It is based on state standards with weekly units comprised of academic lessons and literature-based activities. Our program's goal is to meet the needs of each student while implementing positive learning strategies.  Independent and small group activities are used to develop and reinforce student understanding of the subject material. These activities also build independent and cooperative learning skills.   The following is specific skill sets that we align our instruction with for maximum opportunities for learning as we set our students up for success.

MATHEMATICS  

Number Sense & Measurement

  • Counts & shares concrete objects with peers, enabling them to begin to understand relationships of numbers and how to add and take away from a set of objects.
  • Identify ordinal positions in a sequence.
  • Enhance their understanding of the concepts of comparing quantities.
  • Explore various lengths, heights, weights, time, temperature, and capacities using real-world objects.
  • Counts from 0 to 100 by ones

Geometry and Spatial Sense

  • Become familiar with the properties of various shapes and solids and the vocabulary used to describe them.
  • Make connections between math concepts and the real world to develop an inherent spatial sense.
  • Describes a location of an object in relation  to another using informal language
  • Separates a whole into two equal parts and explain their relationship

Algebraic Thinking

  • Use manipulative and calendars to identify, create, and extend patterns.
  • Sort, classify, and order real-world objects by size, number, and other attributes.
  • Listen to stories, think about and discuss how and why something changed, or predict what will happen next.

Data Analysis and Probability

  • Sort a variety of objects and explain how and why they group objects in a particular fashion.
  • Construct, use, and explain various graphs and make oral comparisons.
  • Represent and interpret data using concrete objects, pictures, and graphs.
  • Read and understands a calendar, using days, weeks, and months

 

READING & LANGUAGE

Phonemic Awareness - Ability to hear, identifies, and manipulate individual sound in spoken words.

  • Demonstrates the concept of a word by dividing spoken sentences into individual words
  • Identify, segment, and combine syllables within spoken words such as clapping syllables and moving manipulatives to represent words
  • Isolate, indentify, categorize, blend, segment, delete, add, or substitute phonemes. 
  • Produce rhyming words from non-rhyming words
  • Identify and isolate the initial and final sound of a spoken word
  • Blend sounds to make spoken words

Print Concepts

  • Ability to recognize that print represents meaning
  • Knows that print moves left-to-right and top-to-bottom, separated by spaces
  • Knows the difference between individual letters and printed words.
  • Recognizes how readers use capitalization and punctuation to comprehend

Letter Recognition and Application

  • Name and identify upper and lower case letters
  • Consistently learns and applies letter sound correspondences of a set of consonants and vowels to begin to read

High Frequency Words

  • Recognizes at least 31 sight words and applies them when reading a text

Decoding Strategies

  • Uses prior knowledge and picture cues to anticipate meaning and make sense of texts
  • Uses individual sounds and  familiar word parts to decode
  • Skips the unknown word and finishes reading the sentence.  Then goes back to fill in a word which would make sense. 
  • Retells or acts out the order of important events in stories to demonstrate understanding

Writing to Record Ideas

  •  Writes to express ideas
  • Writes decodable and familiar words
  • Uses phonetic spelling
  • Writes with fluency, voice and organization

We will be focusing on building foundation for reading success.   Our lesson plans reinforce phonemic awareness, listening comprehension, the alphabet, and beginning reading concepts through the balanced literacy program.

 

SCIENCE

The Kindergarten Science curriculum is designed to nurture the children's natural sense of wonder in making discoveries about the world and understanding Science as a process of investigation.  Daily experiences with objects, plants, or weather provide opportunities to learn about the scientific method.  Various skills will be introduced and integrated within the literature chosen for language activities, as well as in a dedicated science lesson. Concepts to be explored include:

1.   Observing and understanding living and non-living organisms, and identifying living organism's basic needs. 

2.   Understanding and describing properties, patterns, and events in the environment. 

3.   Uses scientific tools to acquire data from the environment

4.   Uses senses to classify and record observations.

5.   Understanding that systems have parts and are composed of organisms and objects.

6.   Understanding that types of changes occur.

7.   Understanding that the natural world includes rocks, soil, and water.

8.   Understands and applies content vocabulary for the science topic.

 

SOCIAL STUDIES

Social Studies include concepts by which children relate to their world, first by immediate experience and then by applying basic concepts to the larger world.  Concepts to be explored include:

            1.  Understanding of holidays and identifying the customs associated with those special events.  Understanding similarities and    differences among people; and how people learn about themselves through family customs.

            2.  Understanding how historical figures and ordinary people help to shape the community, state, and nation.

            3.  Understanding chronological order, location, and physical and human characteristic of an environment.

            4.  Understanding that human basic needs are met in many ways.

            5.  Understanding the importance of jobs and the role modern technology has on our lives.

            6.  Understanding the importance of rules and the role of authority figures.

            7.  Understanding customs, symbols, and celebrations that contribute to our national identity.

            8.  The student applies critical thinking skills to organize and use information.

            9.   Understands and applies content vocabulary for the science topic.

 

FINE ARTS

Our art activities will nurture artistic, musical, and dramatic expression and appreciation of the arts.  These opportunities will be offered in center time and during structured lessons related to a language arts theme and literature.  Art offers the opportunity for imaginative expression through a variety of art materials.  Art allows the children to:

  1. Express individual ideas and feelings in simple media including drawing, painting, collages, ect.
  2. Experiment with art materials to understand properties and to develop skills
  3. Develop and understanding and appreciation of art by providing opportunities to explore the artwork of other students and major artist.

 

MUSIC and DRAMA

The music and theatre arts activities will highlight self expression through music and movement.  Our Kindergarten students will take part in these skills in the classroom, as well as additional weekly music and rhythm instruction from Opus One Music.

  1. Singing concepts and skills involving recognition and imitation of sounds and tone matching.
  2. Using expressive dancing
  3. Exploring sounds using rhythm instruments

Creative Drama provides opportunities for children to dramatize stories through dress-up, puppets, staging, and interpretation.  Retelling, or dramatizing, parts of a story read aloud will be a weekly activity to enhance listening comprehension abilities.
